The Mechanics of the 2011 Tour, the 9th edition of this annual event:
The 2011 Sun City to Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour started on Friday, 4 March at the Sun City Resort and arrived 7 stages later, on Friday, 11 March in Cape Town at the Table Bay Hotel at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront at 14h00. On 13 March the entire team took part in South Africa‘s main cycling event of the year, namely, the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour, incorporating approximately 38 000 cyclists. A multicultural team of approximately 40 people including 30 cyclists, of which 8 were women cyclists, 2 PDI cyclists, 6 international cyclists from Germany, Austria, Iran and Switzerland and approximately 10 support personnel tackled this project.
The Sun City to Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour covers an approximate distance of 1,645 kilometres over 7 days, averaging approximately 228 kilometres per day. All the cyclists cycle the entire route, traveling on National roads for the biggest part of the tour. The team travels along the N14 via Kimberley to Beaufort West and along the N1 to Worcester before arriving at the Table Bay Hotel. The group spends an average of between 8 and 10 hours in the saddle each day, and hopes to maintain an average speed of approximately 31 kilometres per hour over the entire distance.
Physical well-being is critical during such an event. Due to the physically gruelling nature of this event and possible dangers of cycling, all precautions are made to ensure a safe ride with as few incidents as possible. The group has logistical support of approximately 10 staff, including the drivers of the support vehicles, a media liaison officer, photographer, physiotherapists and paramedics.

Marketing and Brand activity:
In the previous 9 years of the Charity Cycle Tour the event managed to receive coverage on television through M-Net‘s Super Cycling, Super Saturday, E-TV as well as SABC Women in Sport. The Tour coverage was packaged into a 30 minute cycling special which was broadcast on DSTV channel S6 and others over a number of weeks. The team also receives coverage and airtime through various radio channels, including Radio RSG, Radio Algoa, Radio 702, Radio 604 and more recently on KFM and Jacaranda FM.
The event received coverage in the printed media in many towns en route. The Tour has its own Web Site facility making use of daily updates as to the progress of the cyclists via blogging and various other social media (Facebook and Twitter), and has links to the sponsors and the respective beneficiary Web Sites.
Further to this, the Tour has attracted many well-known public figures and celebrities, including the very beautiful former Miss SA 2009 Nicole Flint, who courageously took part in the event herself to showcase her passion for the less fortunate and sharing in the initiatives as supported by participants in raising funds for charity! The reigning Miss SA, Bokang Montjane was also involved to see the cyclists off, supporting them at various points throughout our journey and to share in handing over contributions to the various beneficiaries en route.
The Charity Cycling Club will again approach the media to assist with coverage of the 2012 event, requesting members of the media to support the initiative because it‘s a charitable event and no advertising is being paid for.
Additional advertising and branding opportunities exist through the official cycling kit, the official Tour Web Page, branded clothing (provided by the sponsors) as well as magnetic advertising boards on the busses, trucks and trailers accompanying the cyclists.

Costs incurred by The Charity Cycling Club:
As per the Club‘s constitution and as laid down by the Registrar of Public Benefit Organisations, between 30-40% of all the monies raised will be used to cover the costs of this event and a guaranteed 60% of all income generated will be used for the sole purpose it was intended - to plough much-needed funds into charity projects.
The Charity Cycling Club is very proud of our track record and has managed to control expenses in prior Tours, the expenses during 2009 only amounted to 18% of all the money raised and therefore the rest of the money could go to the people who needed it most and by doing so, help to eradicate poverty.
