THE 2010 CYCLE CHALLENGE

Every year, a team of cyclists cycle from Sun City to the Table Bay hotel in Cape Town for charity. This year, some of the team cyclists will be further tested as instead of the 1 645 km ride they usually tackle, they will be travelling a distance of 2 400kms. The 2010 event will be different from previous years as 15 riders will start the Tour on Tuesday 2 March at Beitbridge outside Messina. This group will cycle a total of 2 400 kilometres in 10 days from the most Northern border of South Africa to The Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town where they will arrive on Friday 12 March 2010 at 14h00. The other 17 team members, together with the 15 cyclists from Beitbridge and their support staff of 12 will leave from Sun City on Friday 5 March at 07h00 on their way to The Table Bay Hotel a distance of 1645 km‘s. This distance will be covered in 7 days. On the way the team will stop over at The Flamingo Casino in Kimberley on Sunday 7 March and the Golden Valley Casino in Worcester on Thursday 11 March where hotel management, members of the public, and Miss South Africa, Nicole Flint will welcome the team. On 12 March at 14h00 the team will arrive at their destination, The Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town. Along the way the team will donate money to Sun International‘s community social investment projects which include; Sun City‘s AIDS Orphan Housing Project, Sinothando Childrens Home, De Lat Bat School for the Deaf and Nazareth House. Terrence Parkin a well known deaf professional sportsman and Olympian Champion will be part of the Tour and Johann Reyneke, an acclaimed local deaf pro cyclist will also be taking part. There are nine international riders, four lady cyclists, three PDI cyclists and three German International Iron Man athletes; Richard Wimmer, Rupert Polak and Markus Kalb will be cycling in the 2010 challenge. The team also includes two cancer survivors. The cyclists will cover an average of 240 kilometres per day and hope to complete the entire distance in less than 70 hours. It‘s not a race but an endurance event which will test the cyclist‘s endurance and fitness as every participant needs to complete the total distance each day. Sixty seven year old, Reiner Stolz from Germany will once again be taking part. This is his eighth consecutive Sun City to Table Bay Tour. He will also be part of the team that will complete the 2 400 kms. Upon completion of the tour, these courageous cyclists will participate in the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour, the world's largest individually timed cycle race, with cyclists tackling a scenic 109 km route around Cape Town. “Stamina, character and commitment are vital qualities for endurance cyclists”, says Kurt Peter, Resorts Divisional Director for Sun International. “The team is both mentally and physically prepared for the forthcoming cycle tour and we are proud to be associated with this exceptional fundraising endeavour”.
