Day 10 - Laingsburg to Worcester
The last day of our 10 day journey from Messina to Cape Town! There was a somber mood amongst the team even though we were quietly excited that we were getting close to the end of this unbelievable experience.
As we left the Laingsburg town we started climbing. The bunnies set a very hard pace which forced a number of riders into difficulty. They stayed in front for almost the full 30 kilometers to Matjiesfontein which was a tough ask as we were climbing all the way. At least from here things slowed down slightly for a short while until the climb past Matjiesfontein was just behind us then the German power continues where Angelos left off with a slight tailwind over the right shoulder. The pace was fast and hard and the team arrives at Touwsriver well before the time. It was then decided that people should eat foodstuffs from the truck and no hamburgers were bought as it was way to early to eat yet again.
Everybody was reminded to be careful before our departure of the mountain pass which was lying ahead before we continued our journey towards the Hex river pass for the fast decent. Everything went according to plan and the fastest (and very scary) speed on Tour was recorded on this stretch of road. The spoke of the day award was given to Graham for his dangerous and weird style whilst descending.
At the bottom we regrouped before departing to the Golden Valley Casino, our overnight stop. Once again the team worked well together and we had to wait as we were too early for the media at our arrival therefore we had to stop and wait for time to pass.
Terence and Johann took us into Worcester where we were welcomed by the media, Casino Management, Nicole Flint – Miss SA and the recipients of the R30 000 – the Deaf Institute. The cyclists put their bikes away where after they joined the arrival function.
The evening we had a fantastic dinner in the Kuipers Restaurant with guess what only approximately 5 kilometers of cycling left over before we arrive at the Table Bay!
Sadly our ten day journey has come to an end. Tomorrow, on day 11 we will go to the Argus to register for Sunday‘s race and Miss SA Nicole Flint will proudly be wearing our cycling kit!
